v
Mumps is another form of measles.
v
It is a virus that affects the salivary
glands.
v
This causes swelling of a part of the
jaw.
v
Mumps is not directly
life-threatening.
v
But it can cause hydrocele in men and
egg damage in women.
v
For some, it can affect the pancreas.
v
However, there is no need to fear
this disease. Because the disease is mostly controlled by vaccination.
v
Measles is caused by the measles
virus.
v
Measles can have slightly more
serious consequences than chicken pox.
v
In case of measles virus infection,
rash appears all over the body. A sand-like rash occurs on the skin.
v
If you get measles, you will have a
fever with a cold and cough. Eyes are red.
v
The measles virus can erode the outer
layer of skin in the bronchial tubes. Sometimes it also erodes the walls of the
stomach.
v
There are no direct antiviral drugs
for measles. Vitamin A supplements should be taken to reduce the effects.
v
In Tamil Nadu, a vaccine is given at
the ninth month of birth and another at 15-18 months to prevent measles.
v
The vaccine given at 15-18 months is
called MMR vaccine. It is given to prevent measles, mumps, and rubella viruses.
v
People who have not yet been
vaccinated against measles should get vaccinated if they want to.
Varicella zoster virus shows its activity in 1- 3
weeks after entering the body. It is affected only when the virus is mixed in
the blood. The virus is usually spread primarily through inhalation.
v
There will be severe fever. Fever can
occur even up to 102degree Fahrenheit.
v
It can cause sores on throat, lungs
and skin.
v
Chicken pox lesions usually occur in
areas like the back and abdomen.
Impact:
v
If children get chickenpox, most
likely no treatment will be needed. It will get better on its own in a few
days.
v
Chickenpox can sometimes have serious
consequences in the elderly. Therefore, if you consult a doctor and take
antiviral drugs within the first two days of the onset of chicken pox, the
severity of small pox can be reduced.
v
Elderly people have lower immune
system. Thus, the varicella virus has a chance to attack the nervous system. Meningitis,
pneumonia and cerebellar damage can occur. Therefore, the elderly should not
ignore chickenpox.
Rubella virus:
v
If the rubella virus enters the body,
the skin will thicken.
v
There will be itching and severe
fever.
v
It usually lasts for three days. So,
there is no need to fear.
v
But if rubella virus infects pregnant
women, the baby will be affected. There is a high chance of defects in the
eyes, ears, heart, etc. of the child born.
v
Since the rubella virus is vaccinated
in children, the incidence of this virus has been greatly reduced.
v
However, if women are planning to
have children, they should be vaccinated against rubella virus in advance.
Do’s:
v
Chicken pox sores usually oozing
water. There is a chance of bacterial infection in these sores. Therefore, it
is better to stay in a separate room in case of chickenpox.
v
As the body heats up with chicken pox,
it is better to stay in a cool room until the sores heal.
v
Since neem is a disinfectant, our
ancestors used to spread neem leaves and lay chicken pox victims on it.
However, if there are any germs on the surface of the neem leaf, there is a
possibility that the chicken pox sores will become worse when lying on it.
v
Chickenpox sufferer can take bath
daily. Bathe without using soap.
v
If you don’t take a bath when you
have chicken pox, you must wipe your body with a wet cloth.
v
If you don’t bathe for many days,
sometimes there is a chance that the disease will become worse due to
infection.
Food:
v
In case of chickenpox, take plenty of
water-rich food.
v
Any food can be eaten. But it should
be cleanly cooked food at home. We can eat food by ensuring that it is low in
salt and oil.
v
You should eat more water-rich items like
fruit juices, saline solutions, and tender coconut, and foods rich in vitamin A
like papaya and carrots.
Treatment:
v
No treatment is required for chicken
pox. Rest is enough. Once a person gets chickenpox, there is no chance of it
coming back in his lifetime. This is because the body will produce
automatically an immune response against the varicella virus that causes chicken
pox.
v
If someone in the household has chickenpox,
there is a chance of spreading it to others in the household. Chicken pox can also
occur in household members within a week to three weeks after someone has
chickenpox.
v
Children over 18 months of age should
get one dose of the vaccine and adults should get two doses of the vaccine at
one-month intervals.
v
Many people who go to work are
stressed by chicken pox scars. Natural products that people may try using to
remove chicken pox scars include:
Ø
Aloe vera
Ø
Cocoa butter
Ø
Olive oil
Ø
Jojoba oil
Ø
Lemon juice
Ø
Baking soda.
v
OTC creams: Some OTC
scar-removal creams and ointments may help remove chickenpox scars. People
should look for specific ingredients, such as retinol and glycolic acid, which
are common in products for acne scars.
Ø
Mederma advance plus scar gel
Ø
Cicatrix scar reducing cream
Ø
St.Mege scar repair cream
v
OTC chemical peels: Some OTC
chemical peels are also available. These peels tend to be less effective than
medical peel treatments and may only provide subtle results.
v
Silicone sheets: Silicone
sheets are sheets that a person applies to their scars daily for a fixed
period, generally over 6 months.
(Note: However, it should be
used as per the doctor’s advice.)
